Make a simple switch to help save the planet this Plastic Free July.
Did you know that over 2 million tonnes of plastic packaging are used in the UK every year according to a recent study?
And every day, around 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans* with devastating effects.
As the people currently living on this beautiful planet, we need to take action before it’s too late.
Over the past 7 years, the Plastic Free July campaign has inspired more than 250 million people in 177 countries resulting in a whopping 825 million kilos of plastic waste escaping into the environment every year. But there’s still so much more that can be done, now more than ever.
As well as the hundreds of thousands of lives lost, sadly another alarming outcome of the current pandemic is the rising tide in all things plastic. With some of this obviously unavoidable as essential single-use PPE to keep medical workers and other key workers safe, there has also been an increase in use of plastic bags, reusable cups not always being accepted and an increase in food takeaway items, meaning right now it’s key to raise awareness of trying to reduce our plastic use. Even small switches will have a positive impact.
Plastic coffee pods…a hidden disaster
There are 5,500 years of plastic pollution in the photo below…can you spot it?
The pretty, colourful things below the bee & flower are brightly coloured plastic coffee capsules. Non-recyclable, if they reach landfill they will need around 500 years each to degrade.
So, if you love your Nespresso® coffee machine at home and are buying plastic coffee capsules then this convenience definitely comes at a cost to the planet.
A plastic coffee pod can take up to 500 years to break down while their aluminium capsule cousins take up to 150 years. Not great news for our beautiful planet, which is the inspiration for Plastic Free July.
Fear not though, there’s an easy plastic free swap you can make without sacrificing on taste or ethics!
Enter our Blue Goose compostable, plastic free range of coffee pods that are Nespresso compatible and made using renewable energy and a waste product from the European printing industry. They’re packed full of exceptional grade speciality coffees and give you an easy plastic free swap that tastes great, are ethically sourced and there’s no guilt trip every time you brew!
When the pods are empty, just pop them used capsules in your council food waste collection (or home compost pile if you’re a pro composter) to be turned into compost or liquid fertiliser depending on local council processes.
What’s not to love, specially during Plastic Free July!
So, why not take the challenge and join the Plastic Free July campaign this month along with millions of people worldwide reducing their plastic waste to help save our planet for the future.
Whether you’re a beginner looking for a few single-use plastics to avoid, or someone well on their way to a plastic free life, there’s so much that can be done both yourself as a consumer and by raising awareness with others of the effects that plastic is having on our planet.
Making the switch to our range of compostable coffee capsules for Nespresso® machines could be your first step.
